So African perspectives were not included in its development, really. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that to bring African perspectives into psychology, we have to turn to thinkers and researchers in Anthropology, Philosophy &amp; Theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Curry &amp; Jones<\/strong> researched African subjects to find out about intelligence, self-concept, personality &amp; attitudes &#8211; but this was from a Western perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:19% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" src=\"https:\/\/allalignedhealing.com\/unisapsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/black-is-beautiful.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-644 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">From the late 1960s and 70s, African-American psychologists started to bring in Afrocentric ideas, research and theory. However this was filtered through the Afro-American lens and not really African as such.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psychology faculties have lagged behind at African Such people may still take pride in their heritage and revert back to their roots at times.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there really such a thing as an African perspective?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"318\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/allalignedhealing.com\/unisapsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/diversity.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-648 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allalignedhealing.com\/unisapsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/diversity.jpg 318w, https:\/\/allalignedhealing.com\/unisapsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/diversity-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">There are many many traditions, languages and cultures stretching from the Sahara to South Africa, with diverse peoples and histories.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However several authors believe that there is an overarching African perspective, and that these cultures have a unity in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>spirituality<\/li><li>representation<\/li><li>expression through art and behaviour<\/li><li>An overarching set of principles derived from common mythology and collective rituals<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is an African perspective on indigenous psychology necessary?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nobles<\/strong>: Seeing all the people in the world through Western conceptualisations is <em><strong>scientific colonialism<\/strong><\/em>. To really understand speak to the lived experience of Africans, there is a need for an <em><strong>indigenous psychology<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nsamenang<\/strong>: African social thought and folk psychology are structured by different ethnotheories and epistemologies. So Western concepts and categories do not fit. Progress in psychology in Africa will only be made with the development of an indigenous body of psychological knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indigenous psychology can contextualise and enrich our understanding within local contexts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also give more understanding of human variability in psychological functioning and possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"African-view\">The view of the person and worldview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>holistic<\/strong>: humans form an indivisible whole with the cosmos (God, other people and nature)<\/li><li><strong>anthropocentric:<\/strong> humanity is the centre and point of departure for the Universe<\/li><li>Everything belongs together and is connected<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"three-cosmic-orders\"><strong>Sow<\/strong>: there are three cosmic orders of reality:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/allalignedhealing.com\/unisapsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Neteru.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-651\" width=\"614\" height=\"412\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>macrocosmos<\/strong>: The spiritual and religious domain in which God is encountered. <ul><li>The <strong><em>ancestors<\/em><\/strong> intervene and help us make contact with God. <\/li><li>God has withdrawn from and transcended the human realm, so we need the ancestors for daily spiritual and religious life. <\/li><li>This spirituality is interwoven with day to day life. There is no distinction between sacred and worldly life.<\/li><li><strong><em>Collective functioning<\/em><\/strong>: Religion is focussed on the community rather than the individual, and is practiced collectively. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The <strong>Meso-cosmos<\/strong>: The Meso-cosmos is the realm of magic, where coincidence, ancestors, malignant spirits and sorcerers are dominant.  <ul><li>This is an imaginative realm for both individuals and the community. It involves the ancestors, nature and living beings.<\/li><li>It is how conflict, sickness and death are explained.<\/li><li>The ancestors can be spoken to in this realm.<\/li><li>This is the world in which healers and shamans work.<\/li><li>It is the place where causality originates for what happens in people&#8217;s lives.<\/li><li><strong>&#8220;structured collective imaginary<\/strong>&#8221; because it structures and determines the day to day psychological fate of people, acting on them both for good and ill. <\/li><li>So causality is attributed to <strong>external agents<\/strong>. People are more musical and creative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life is more harmonious and rhythmic &#8211; people dance and sing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collective support of the group reduces anxiety and stress and gives a sense of safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rhythm brings structure and coherence to the experience of life, purpose, meaning and connection to the inner self, the sacred, and the collective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The creative expression of African traditional peoples means that the repressed and dangerous Freudian unconscious has no hold because people are more touch with their own consciousnesses and less repressed and alienated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"African-psychopathology\">Views on psychopathology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>health is a state of wholeness and integration<\/li><li>Illness is fragmentation and disintegration<\/li><li>mind and body are not separated, so mental symptoms are embodied and physical symptoms are also mental symptoms. <\/li><li>So psychological problems may be described as directly with a person. <\/li><li>Hearing the ancestors and being bewitched are not necessarily symptoms of schizophrenia.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2
